How the Head of Fox News Is Making Americans More Right-Wing, More Ignorant and Ever More Terrified - Digg
How the Head of Fox News Is Making Americans More Right-Wing, More Ignorant and Ever More Terrified - Digg: "Even his boss Rupert Murdoch is afraid of Roger Ailes. At the Fox News Chrismas party the year the network overtook arch-rival CNN in the cable ratings, tipsy employees were herded down to the basement of a midtown bar in New York. As they gathered around a television mounted high on the wall, an image flashed to life, glowing bright in the darkened tavern: the MSNBC logo. A chorus of boos erupted among the Fox faithful. The CNN logo followed, and the catcalls multiplied. Then a third slide appeared, with a telling twist. In place of the logo for Fox News was a beneficent visage: the face of the network's founder. The man known to his fiercest loyalists simply as 'the Chairman' – Roger Ailes. 'It was as though we were looking at Mao,' recalls Charlie Reina, a former Fox News producer."

"On July 12, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow did a segment highlighting some of their more bizarre claims in a series of video clips. These included Wagner saying that the Japanese stock market collapsed because the emperor had sex with a demon (the sun goddess), another leading NAR figure, John Benefiel, calling the Statue of Liberty 'a demonic idol', and a third figure, Mike Bickle, calling Oprah Winfrey 'a forerunner to the Harlot movement', or, as Maddow put it, a 'harbinger of the antichrist'.
But these aren't just a collection of random bizarre claims. As researcher Rachel Tabachnick - who's been studying NAR since 2008 - wrote the day after: 'These video clips should receive much more national exposure, but they need to be viewed in context of the movement they represent.'
Not your father's religious right
Encompassing a variety of organisations and networks of activist groups, the NAR is not just concerned about particular issues, such as abortion or gay rights, or even about so-called 'values', which is the impression that even Goodstein's 2008 story left with readers.
Rather, the NAR is committed to replacing democracy with a religious dictatorship, which it sees as a necessary prelude for Christ's return to earth."

Have you seen, anywhere, in any media, or even heard reported or repeated on NPR, the following sentence? “We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.”
It’s right there on Page 4 of the official Standard & Poors “Research Update” – the actual report on what they did and why – published on August 5th as the explanation for why they believe Congress – and even the Gang of Twelve – will be unable to actually deal with the US debt crisis.
Perhaps it’s just lazy – the bullet points at the beginning of the report don’t mention the Republicans or taxes, but instead just say, for example (part of one of six quick bullet-points): “[T]he downgrade reflects our view that the effectiveness, stability, and predictability of American policymaking and political institutions have weakened at a time of ongoing fiscal and economic challenges…”"

Presidential wannabee Gov. Rick Perry's day of prayer and fasting on Saturday will feature the wackiest of the religious right-wing. Among their beliefs: blackbirds are dying because of gay soldiers, the Statue of Liberty is a 'demonic idol,' the gay rights movement is a “satanic anointment,' Hurricane Katrina was divine retribution for the city's sins, and Oprah is a “forerunner to the harlot movement' who signals the Apocalypse. Well, they might be right on that one. Still, it may be a flop: Only 8,000 believers signed up beforehand for a stadium that seats 71,500, and none of the 49 governors invited plan to attend. So much for a nation healing itself. Rachel Maddow has more on who will be there, and why you might not want to be."

how corporations serve us......
If corporations are so great, why do you spend half your life on hold?
O.K., so you try and call your health insurance company to find out if a certain medical procedure is covered under your plan. After being forced to listen to nine options, you press customer service and a recorded voice tells you that due to the company "experiencing excessive call volume," you will need to wait to speak to an "available agent."
When someone finally answers, they have a foreign accent - as you know from past calls, the customer service benefits department has been offshored - and after you ask your question, you are asked if you mind being put on hold while the representative consults his or her manager. After several minutes, the customer service agent - who is paid a subsistence wage - removes the hold and asks if this is a pre-existing condition. You point out that since you've had the policy for two years, the pre-existing condition restriction no longer applies.
The benefits representative in a distant land responds that he or she needs to again consult with the manager and you are put on hold.
When you again hear a voice, you are told that the diagnostic testing is covered, but that you have a $4,500 deductible, so the insurance won't be paying for it. You are then asked if you need any further help.
Then you call your bank that is "too big to fail" about a discrepancy in your monthly statement and are put through a loop of recorded questions and answers that don't resolve your problem, but it doesn't matter much because when you press a number that you thought would lead you to a real person, you are somehow disconnected.
Next, you call the electric utility to tell them that a tree just fell on your house power line and the house is without electricity in 98 degree heat, and after being on hold for 20 minutes, someone comes on the phone and asks if the line is sparking or setting anything on fire. You answer no, not that you can see, and then get told that since it is not an emergency, no one can come out for a few days because there aren't enough line men or women at this time to handle other than live "hot" wire repairs.
And then you call the liquor store to see if they deliver - and they answer right away, and you order a bottle of gin.
Two weeks later, you get a letter from your health insurance company informing you that although you called a benefits consultant you failed to call the department that does prior authorization and, therefore, your claim is denied and it won't even go toward your deductible.
You call the liquor store and order another bottle of gin, and are mystified at how corporations are held up as models of customer service and efficiency while the government is constantly disparaged.
And then you take another sip of gin because the liquor store is about the only business that delivers what you want.

Obama Created More Jobs In One Year Than Bush Created In Eight
By Alex Seitz-Wald on Jan 7, 2011 at 5:30 pm
This morning, the Labor Department released its employment data for December, showing that the U.S. economy ended the year by adding 113,000 private sector jobs, knocking the unemployment rate down sharply from 9.8 percent to 9.4 percent — its lowest rate since July 2009. The “surprising drop — which was far better than the modest step-down economists had forecast — was the steepest one-month fall since 1998.” October and November’s jobs numbers were also revised upward by almost 80,000 each. Still, 14.5 million Americans remain unemployed, and jobs will have to be created much faster in coming months for the country to pull itself out of the economic doldrums.
Responding the jobs report, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) noted that President Obama and the Democratic Congress have created “more jobs in 2010 than President Bush did over eight years.”
Indeed, from February 2001, Bush’s first full month in office, through January 2009, his last, the economy added just 1 million jobs. By contrast, in 2010 alone, the economy added at least 1.1 million jobs. This chart, produced by Pelosi’s office, demonstrates the difference between the Bush administration and the Obama administration on jobs:
As the Wall Street Journal noted in the last month of Bush’s term, the former president had the “worst track record for job creation since the government began keeping records.” And job creation under Bush was anemic long before the recession began. Bush’s supply-side economics “fostered the weakest jobs and income growth in more than six decades,” along with “sluggish business investment and weak gross domestic product growth,” the Center for American Progress’ Joshua Picker explained. “On every major measurement” of income and employment, “the country lost ground during Bush’s two terms,” the National Journal’s Ron Brownstein observed, parsing Census data.

Ask Governor Jay Nixon to oppose legislation that would relax rules for commercial breeding facilities.
Goal: 30,000 • Progress: 11,757
Sponsored by: The Animal Rescue Site
The Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act (PMCPA) was passed in Missouri in November 2010 in an attempt to put more regulations on puppy mills and their practices. This was a huge success for puppies in Missouri — the state that leads all others in commercial dog breeding.
But in mid-April 2011, legislators voted to reject the bill — and won.
Now it's up to Missouri governor Jay Nixon to either sign or veto the new bill. If he supports the rejection, commercial breeding facilities won't be required to increase the standard of living for the puppies. They won't have to take care in providing acceptable cages, allowing time each day to play outside, or making sure the dogs aren't breeding too often.
This could mean disaster and even death for thousands of puppies. Speak out for the puppies and sign the petition asking Governor Nixon to veto the rejection of PMCPA.

Whitey Bulger's Politician Brother Back in Spotlight - William Bulger was president of state Senate, Massachusetts University
Whitey Bulger's Politician Brother Back in Spotlight - William Bulger was president of state Senate, Massachusetts University: "(NEWSER) – Whitey Bulger saw at least one familiar face in court yesterday: his brother, William, the former president of the Massachusetts Senate who steadfastly refused to help authorities bring in his brother. The former fugitive mouthed 'hello' and nodded. The reunion of sorts has led to a spate of stories along the tale-of-two-brothers vein, exploring how the Boston natives rose to power in their chosen fields. See the Boston Globe and AP.
“You’ve got to understand something,' said one of William's friends. “We’re South Boston people, and when you grow up in Southie, the cardinal virtue is loyalty. ... And you think he wouldn’t be there today?' William eventually became president of the University of Massachusetts but resigned in 2003 amid pressure from Gov. Mitt Romney and others over what the Globe describes as his 'cavalier' attitude toward his brother. 'It’s my hope that I’m never helpful to anyone against him,' he once told a grand jury. 'I don’t feel an obligation to help everyone to catch him.'"

'Made In America' Store Makes Buying Patriotic - Owner got ticked off at foreign products, sells only US goods
'Made In America' Store Makes Buying Patriotic - Owner got ticked off at foreign products, sells only US goods: "NEWSER) – Outsourcing is a cruel mistress—but for Mark Andol, it also provided a business idea that looks to be taking off. Andol owns the Made in America store in a small New York town on the way to Niagara Falls, and as its name suggests, all 3,000 products are strictly produced in the good ‘ole USA, NPR reports. Andol got the idea when his welding business nearly went bust because of foreign competition. Store managers spend hours of their days hunting products and making sure they are all-USA, because even packaging or glue made overseas is a no-go.
'If, for some reason, something were to slip through the cracks, we take the product out of the store, burn it, or whatever we do to it, because they lied to us,' a manager says. The store's standards to qualify for an American label are stricter than the FTC's. Sales have doubled in the last year, largely in part to tourists and other out-of-town visitors. One downside: The store carries virtually no electronic goods."

AARP has supported cuts to SS bens for years
AARP's Long History of Supporting Social Security Cuts
The Wall Street Journal recently reported the AARP will support benefit cuts to Social Security. The AARP responded by saying that “our position has not changed on Social Security.”
That’s actually true. For years, the AARP has wanted to cut Social Security benefits. It is critical to note that despite AARP's language about wanting to "save Social Security," they are using the same word tricks used by others who want to destroy our social safety net.
While our government has shoved trillions to banks, Social Security has and will continue be solvent for decades. Any "changes" to Social Security now will inevitably lead to benefit cuts. That's what we must prevent.
Read the facts, and forward this email to your friends and family. If you haven't yet, please sign our petition to pledge to protect Social Security from AARP.
1. AARP did not deny the Wall Street Journal’s report; its response even showed the AARP is open to “changes in benefits.”
In the Wall Street Journal article, AARP policy director John Rother was clear that he's willing to support Social Security benefit cuts, saying, “The ship was sailing. I wanted to be at the wheel when that happens.” Current AARP CEO A. Barry Rand called the WSJ piece inaccurate and misleading, but didn’t clarify what he thought was inaccurate. Rand’s statement even reiterated AARP’s belief that “changes” need to be made to Social Security benefits.

2. AARP officials admitted the organization was discussing benefit cuts for “months” with the Wall Street Journal.
While trying to spin the AARP’s exposed to scheme to support Social Security cuts, AARP legislative director David Certner said the AARP was “never seeking this kind of publicity” for its position. Certner said AARP officials had discussed benefit changes for “months” with the Wall Street Journal.

3. AARP was willing to raise the retirement age during George W. Bush’s attempts to privatize Social Security in 2005.
Then-AARP CEO William Novellli put raising the retirement age “on the table” in 2005.
“‘There's a lot of opportunity for common ground. If we could get the private accounts, the carve-outs, out of the way I think we could get to solvency fairly quickly.’ That includes discussion over an increase in the retirement age, said Novelli. ‘We are willing to consider it,’ he said. ‘It ought to be on the table.’”

4. In 2005, AARP CEO William Novelli called adjusting benefits a “reasonable step.”
"’Social Security does not need a radical overhaul,’ AARP Chief Executive Officer William Novelli said in speech at the National Press Club. ‘Reasonable steps such as these, including possibly adjusting benefits, are enough to strengthen Social Security for the long term.’”

5. An AARP memo suggested “changes in benefits” as a solution for “Social Security solvency.”
An AARP official provided the Huffington Post a 2005 memo that outlined the organization’s position on Social Security. The document shows the AARP offered “changes in benefits” as a positive position for the organization to take in the Social Security fight at the time.

6. An AARP official flippantly dismissed those who opposed Social Security cuts.
AARP policy director John Rother dismissed people who said they wouldn’t support Social Security cuts. "I know all these people personally and they'll say we have to be hard line now to influence the debate...I kind of take it with a grain of salt, these emphatic statements," Rother said.
